Bishop says diocese will not abide by “unjust law”
one day ago by Office of Communications

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec, bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, has asked pastors to bring to the attention of their parishioners a new government mandate that jeopardizes their religious freedoms. The United States government announced on Jan. 23 that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer employees’ health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs and contraception. This is a contradiction to Catholic beliefs.

Letters were distributed this week to all parishes in the eight counties of Western New York, and priests throughout the diocese will be addressing this matter at Masses over the weekend.

Bishops vow to voice government edict forcing contraceptive coverage
1/20/2012 3:08:37 PM by United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

The Catholic bishops of the United States called “literally unconscionable” a decision by the Obama Administration to continue to demand that sterilization, abortifacients and contraception be included in virtually all health plans. The Jan. 20 announcement means that this mandate and its very narrow exemption will not change at all; instead there will only be a delay in enforcement against some employers.

With the goal increased by $100,000 from last year’s successful Appeal, the announcement kicked off the 88th annual campaign. Bishop Kmiec also announced the theme of this year’s drive – “Protect. Strengthen. Empower.” – and named Blessed John Paul II the patron of Appeal 2012.

“This year’s theme articulates how our many programs, services and activities benefit the community, and those who turn to us for help,” said Bishop Kmiec. “The theme also magnifies the link between the generosity of our donors and the results of our efforts.”

Bishop Kmiec hails appointment of new cardinals
1/7/2012 8:09:00 AM by Office of Communications

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec issued the following statement upon the appointmenet of 22 new cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI

Today’s announcement by the Holy Father that he has named Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York and Archbishop Thomas Collins of Toronto to the College of Cardinals has brought great joy to me and to the faithful of the Diocese of Buffalo.

Cardinal-designate Dolan is a caring priest who shepherds the people of the Archdiocese of New York with great pastoral care, especially when it comes to his concern for the voiceless and the disadvantaged. I have great respect and admiration for him, and I feel blessed to have known him for the past 18 years.

Cardinal-designate Collins is admired for his wisdom and for his service to the Church in Toronto and throughout Canada.

Archbishop Dolan elevated to cardinal
1/6/2012 10:58:00 AM by Office of Communications, Archdiocese of New York

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has announced that His Excellency the Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York, will be elevated to the dignity of Cardinal in a Consistory to be held on February 18, 2012.

Archbishop Dolan released a statement in which he expressed his gratitude to Pope Benedict XVI saying that he is "honored, humbled, and grateful."  He also thanked the people of the archdiocese of New York, “this is about an affirmation of love from the Pope to a celebrated archdiocese and community, and a summons to its unworthy archbishop to serve Jesus, His Church universal, His vicar on earth, and His people better.”

Cardinal-designate Dolan was among 22 new cardinals named today by the Holy Father.  Two other Americans will also be elevated to cardina:  Cardinal-designate Thomas Collins of the Archdiocese of Toronto and Cardinal-designate Edwin F. O'Brien, former archbishop of Baltimore and curernt grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem.

In December of 1961, Elvis Presley’s “Blue Hawaii” was number one on the album charts, President John F. Kennedy approved of the deployment of U.S. military crews and helicopters to Vietnam and young Edward U. Kmiec of Trenton, N.J. was preparing for his ordination to the priesthood.

His priestly journey would include an assignment as assistant pastor at St. Rose Parish in Belmar, N.J., secretary and master of ceremonies to the bishop of Trenton, and vice-chancellor of the Diocese of Trenton.

Following 12 years as bishop of Nashville, Bishop Kmiec has spent the last seven years as bishop of Buffalo.
