The Electric Tower in downtown Bufflao

The Electric Tower is located in the heart of downtown Buffalo.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Blessed Mother Teresa, two Buffalo landmarks were lit in blue and white on the evening of August 26. The colors symbolized the Missionaries of Charity, the order of women religious founded by the woman who is now being promoted for sainthood by the Vatican.

The Diocese of Buffalo and the Diocese of St. Catharines, Ontario, made a joint request to the Peace Bridge Authority, asking that the span be lit in honor of Blessed Mother Teresa.  The Diocese of Buffalo made a similar request to Iskalo Development, owner of the Electric Tower.

“This is a beautiful tribute to Blessed Mother Teresa,” Bishop Kmiec said. “Her missionary spirit lives on through the countless lives she touched, and I am grateful that this unique structure will pay tribute to her on this special occasion. This is symbolic in that Blessed Mother Teresa’s light continues to shine around the world.”

The lighting of the Peace Bridge is most appropriate,” Msgr. Kirkpatrick said. “Blessed Mother Teresa was truly a child of the light whose life was a shining example of Christ our Light reaching out to people everywhere promoting love and peace in our world. The lighting of this bridge which spans two dioceses and two countries, symbolizes her light reaching out across the great chasm to all people.”

The Peace Bridge spans the U.S. and Canada, from Buffalo to Fort Erie

The Peace Bridge spans the Niagara River from the U.S. to Canada, connecting Buffalo to Fort Erie.

One of the most recognizable buildings in the Buffalo skyline, the Electric Tower, owned by Iskalo Development, has been returned to its original grandeur including a comprehensive restoration of the building lobby and common areas, and a full building mechanical system replacement. For special occasions and community events, a series of LED lights located on the top three tiers of the Electric Tower are lit in custom colors at dusk and stay lit until dawn.

Launched on May 13, 2009, the Peace Bridge state-of-the-art lighting system is controlled by sophisticated computer software that possesses unlimited color options, timings and themes, allowing for the Peace Bridge to offer unique and captivating lighting at the push of a button. Such lighting options include special color themes for various American and Canadian national holidays, Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres home games, as well as specific dates like Halloween and Domestic Violence Awareness day.
