Camp Turner, the diocesan-owned summer camp, will open for its 88th season. Located in Allegany State Park, the camp offers hiking, swimming and horseback riding, as well as other traditional outdoor activities. As a Catholic institution, Camp Turner sets out to teach its campers the wonder of God’s creation, as well as the value of each individual. Staff there listens to campers and help them enjoy their time at camp as they teach the campers to try new things without fear of failing. The season kicked off July 5. read more...

Children as well as adults are bombarded with different types of the written word necessary for their lives in the 21st century. Students write daily in classrooms and for homework. They write for every major subject area, including science, math, history, language arts, spelling and social studies. They write homework assignments in planners, essays and their name on top of their papers a thousand times in a school year. The repetition of this kind of writing is good for practice and good for learning. However, one aspect of writing which also needs to be nurtured is the love of writing for pure creative purposes. read more...

Koty Mann will never drink a Coke without thinking of the homeless. During a mission trip to Nicaragua, the 16-year-old saw a man living in a shelter built from Coca-Cola and Dasani vending machines. “It never leaves your heart; remembering all the people down there is like a slideshow that keeps going through your head,” he said. read more...

Music is an extension of the soul, and many students in Western New York have gathered as a part of the Western New York Catholic Honor Band to express themselves through this creative outlet.
The Western New York Catholic School Honor Band is a band comprised of students from Catholic elementary schools across Western New York. The students who are in the band have been chosen to participate in the band based on a certain level of achievement obtained playing their specific instruments.

Where in the world is Brian Hamp? Well, in mid-April the eighth-grader was in Albany competing in the National Geographic Bee. A student at St. Amelia School in Tonawanda, Hamp, 13, made it to the state championship after winning his class and school competitions. He also had to take a written qualifying test. read more...
