When I was growing up, my Grandma DeAngelis lived with us. I never really thought twice about it. As an only child, it meant always having a playmate around, only this one would teach me how to make pasta, and she’d braid my hair and she’d listen to me talk and sing. It wasn’t until she passed when I was 10 years old that I truly realized how lucky I was to have her there.
Today, my mom watches my son. As I walk out the door for work every morning I can see what an influence she has on his life. “Grannie” is his best bud!
I looked up some census information and found that in 2005, 30 percent of children under 5, whose moms worked outside the home, were being cared for on a regular basis by a grandparent. In 2007 the census found that 6.2 million grandparents had grandchildren under the age of 18 living with them.
It’s time to say thanks, and Father Paul D. Seil, host of “Our Daily Bread,” does just that. This month Gloria Lavin, who has been a foster grandparent for years, teaches Father Seil how she prepares one of her “angels” favorite dishes, mac and cheese.
Also in the kitchen with Father Seil are Joe and Jeanette Urbaniak, who show him how they prepare a quick tuna sandwich and fruit for their hungry group of grandchildren.
Its grandparent’s day on “Our Daily Bread,” so join us Saturday, Oct. 15, at 5:30 a.m. and noon on WKBW-TV Ch. 7. Check the website
